Only lines whose entire program is closed to children qualified: Virgin Voyages and Viking (18 and over), Saga (50 and over, companions 40 and over) and Ambassador Cruise Line (adults-only no-fly program from 2027-28, with one multigenerational sailing left in 2026). Lines with adults-only ships but family ships elsewhere in the fleet (P\\&O Cruises, Marella Cruises) and adult-oriented lines that still admit children (Oceania, Azamara, Windstar) were excluded from the ranking and discussed in the text. Age policies were checked against operator statements and trade reports between October 2025 and October 19, 2026.\n\n### 1. Virgin Voyages\n\n[Explore Virgin Voyages](https://crusiefrog.com/cruise-lines/virgin-voyages)\n\n18 and over on every sailing; four near-identical ships rated 4.3, about 20 included restaurants, tips and basic Wi-Fi in the fare.\n\n### 2. Viking Ocean Cruises\n\n[Explore Viking Ocean Cruises](https://crusiefrog.com/cruise-lines/viking-ocean-cruises)\n\nNo guests under 18, no casinos, no kids' clubs; 15 calm ships of under 1,000 guests rated 4.3, with a shore excursion in every port included.\n\n### 3. Saga Cruises\n\n[Explore Saga Cruises](https://crusiefrog.com/cruise-lines/saga-cruises)\n\nFor travelers 50 and over (companions 40 and over); two sub-1,000-guest newbuilds rated up to 4.2, chauffeur to the port and insurance included.\n\n### 4. Viking River Cruises\n\n[Explore Viking River Cruises](https://crusiefrog.com/cruise-lines/viking-river-cruises)\n\nAdults-only since 2018 across the largest river fleet in the world; consistent Longships rated 3.8, best for first-time river cruisers.\n\n### 5. Ambassador Cruise Line\n\n[Explore Ambassador Cruise Line](https://crusiefrog.com/cruise-lines/ambassador-cruise-line)\n\nBritish no-fly line going fully child-free from 2027-28; older ships rated 3.2 but low fares, single cabins and regional UK ports.\n\n## What counts as adults-only\n\nPlenty of cruise lines feel grown-up. Only a few actually turn children away at the gangway. The difference matters if you are booking a school-holiday week and want a pool deck without a splash zone. For this ranking we counted a line only if every sailing in its program is closed to children, then ordered those lines by our editorial fleet rating. Lines that run one or two adults-only ships inside a family fleet get their own section at the end.\n\n## 1. Virgin Voyages\n\n[Virgin Voyages](https://crusiefrog.com/cruise-lines/virgin-voyages) is the only major line built from the keel up for adults. Every guest must be 18 or older, and the four ships, Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady, Resilient Lady and Brilliant Lady, are close copies of each other, each carrying about 2,770 guests. There is no main dining room or buffet. Instead the fare covers some 20 restaurants, along with tips, basic Wi-Fi and group fitness classes. Alcohol is extra, prepaid as a Bar Tab rather than a package.\n\nOur fleet rating of 4.3 rests on the food and the design. The weak spot is the cabin: standard bathrooms are tight and storage is limited. The four- and five-night Miami runs to the Beach Club at Bimini are the easiest first cruise for anyone who has avoided traditional lines, and the Mediterranean and Alaska seasons suit people who want more ports. It is a sociable ship with late-night parties, so if you want quiet, read on.\n\n## 2. Viking Ocean Cruises\n\n[Viking](https://crusiefrog.com/cruise-lines/viking-ocean-cruises) is the opposite answer to the same question. No one under 18 sails, and the line also skips casinos, photographers and formal nights. Its 15 ocean ships carry 930 or 998 guests apiece, all in veranda staterooms, and they share the same Scandinavian design, infinity pool and Nordic spa. The fare includes a guided excursion in every port, Wi-Fi, beer and wine with lunch and dinner, and the specialty restaurants.\n\nThe fleet rates 4.3, level with Virgin, and Condé Nast Traveler readers have put Viking first among ocean lines for six straight years. The trade-off is sameness: one Viking ship feels much like the next, and the evening entertainment is a lecture or a trio, not a show. For a couple who choose a cruise for the destinations, that is exactly the point. Viking's two expedition ships, Octantis and Polaris, follow the same adults-only rule in Antarctica and the Great Lakes.\n\n## 3. Saga Cruises\n\n[Saga](https://crusiefrog.com/cruise-lines/saga-cruises) draws its line at 50 rather than 18. Guests must be 50 or older, and a traveling companion must be at least 40, a rule [Travel Weekly](https://www.travelweekly.com/Cruise/Saga-Cruises/Review) traces back to the line's founding as an over-50s specialist. Its two ocean ships, Spirit of Discovery and Spirit of Adventure, are modern Meyer Werft newbuilds for 999 guests, and the fares are the most inclusive in Britain: a chauffeur collects you at home, travel insurance is bundled, and the specialty restaurants carry no charge.\n\nThe fleet rates 4.0, with Spirit of Adventure the stronger ship at 4.2 for its Nepalese restaurant and finish. Value is the catch. A two-week Canaries cruise can cost more than twice the fare of a comparable Fred. Olsen trip, and you need to want the quiet, mature atmosphere the age rule creates. Saga's river ships on the Rhine, Danube and Moselle follow the same rule.\n\n## 4. Viking River Cruises\n\n[Viking River Cruises](https://crusiefrog.com/cruise-lines/viking-river-cruises) banned children in 2018, a move [widely reported](https://www.fox5dc.com/news/viking-cruises-bans-children-says-clients-want-kid-free-vacations) at the time, and the policy has held. The result is the largest adults-only fleet afloat: 87 river ships, most of them 190-guest Longships on the Rhine and Danube, plus Nile, Mekong and Mississippi vessels. Fares include an excursion in each port, Wi-Fi and wine and beer with meals.\n\nThe fleet rates 3.8, below the ocean side, mainly because the Longships are compact and the standard cabins are small. For a first river cruise the consistency is a comfort rather than a flaw: you know what you will get on any of the 87 ships.\n\n## 5. Ambassador Cruise Line\n\n[Ambassador](https://crusiefrog.com/cruise-lines/ambassador-cruise-line) is the budget pick. The British line sails secondhand midsize ships, Ambience and Ambition, from London Tilbury and regional ports such as Newcastle, Liverpool and Bristol, and it has been adult-focused since launch. From the 2027-28 season every no-fly sailing is child-free, with a single multigenerational voyage left in 2026, according to [Cruise Mapper](https://www.cruisemapper.com/news/15396-ambassador-cruise-line-adult-only-no-fly-programme).\n\nThe fleet rates 3.2. Ambience dates from 1991, several restaurants cost extra, and the shows are modest. Against that, fares are low, single cabins are plentiful, and the ships have a lot of space per guest. If sailing from a port near home matters more than a new ship, this is where to look.\n\n## Lines with adults-only ships, not adults-only fleets\n\nTwo British mainstream lines reserve specific ships for adults. [P\\&O Cruises](https://crusiefrog.com/cruise-lines/p-o-cruises) runs Arcadia and Aurora as adults-only for most of the year, though it will open about 20 sailings between December 2026 and September 2027 to families, per [TravelMole](https://travelmole.com/presszone/po-cruises-opens-up-arcadia-and-aurora-to-all-ages-on-select-holidays-from-december-2026-uk/). [Marella Cruises](https://crusiefrog.com/cruise-lines/marella-cruises) sails Marella Explorer 2 as adults-only and, [TUI Group says](https://www.tuigroup.com/en/newsroom/news/marella-cruises-launches-winter-2027-season-with-expanded-adults-only-investments-on-marella-discovery-2), is making Marella Discovery 2 a permanent adults-only ship with a speakeasy and escape room replacing the kids' spaces. We rank the individual ships in [our list of the best adults-only cruise ships](https://crusiefrog.com/news/best-adults-only-cruise-ships-2026).\n\nOne caution on the premium end. [Oceania](https://crusiefrog.com/cruise-lines/oceania-cruises), [Azamara](https://crusiefrog.com/cruise-lines/azamara) and [Windstar](https://crusiefrog.com/cruise-lines/windstar-cruises) have no kids' clubs and draw few families, but none of them bars children. If you need a guarantee, stick to the five lines above.","textStyle":"body","layout":"text"}]}
