The ship is small, so you see the same faces every day. Excursions are included and guided, so you are never standing in a strange town wondering where to go. Dinner is open seating at one time, so you walk into the restaurant and someone waves you over. [AmaWaterways](https://crusiefrog.com/cruise-lines/amawaterways) does all of that, and then it does a few things specifically for people traveling alone.\n\n## The ships\n\nMost of the fleet is 135-meter European river ships carrying 150 to 160 guests, such as [AmaKristina](https://crusiefrog.com/ships/amakristina) on the Rhine and [AmaLea](https://crusiefrog.com/ships/amalea) on the Danube. They have one main restaurant, a small tasting-menu venue called The Chef's Table, a lounge with a bar where the cruise manager gives the next day's briefing, and a sun deck with a walking track and a tiny pool. There is nowhere to get lost and nowhere to hide, which for most solo guests is exactly the point.\n\n[AmaMagna](https://crusiefrog.com/ships/amamagna) on the Danube is the exception. It is twice the width of a standard river ship and carries 196 guests with four restaurants, a proper spa and a water-sports platform. It feels more like a small boutique hotel than a riverboat, and it gives a solo traveler more ways to change the scenery over a week.\n\n## Single staterooms, if you can get one\n\nAmaWaterways is one of the few river lines with cabins built for one. They are on four older ships, [AmaCello](https://crusiefrog.com/ships/amacello), [AmaDante](https://crusiefrog.com/ships/amadante), [AmaDolce](https://crusiefrog.com/ships/amadolce) and [AmaLyra](https://crusiefrog.com/ships/amalyra). Each has a handful of 140-square-foot single staterooms with a French balcony, and they are sold at the standard per-person cruise fare with no supplement.\n\nThese are 2008 and 2009 ships, so they do not have the twin-balcony rooms or the full list of amenities of the newer fleet. They sail the Rhine, Danube and the rivers of France, and they are a comfortable, well-run way to see Europe. The downside is simple math: a few single rooms on a 140-guest ship sell out early, often a year or more ahead on popular dates.\n\n## What the supplement looks like on everything else\n\nOn the rest of the fleet, a solo traveler pays a single supplement to take a double stateroom. The line rarely leaves it at full price. At the time of writing, its solo page lists three offers for bookings made by the end of 2026.\n\nThe best is a waived single supplement on select 2027 Europe sailings. It covers most stateroom categories, including balcony staterooms, but not suites, and it uses the promo code SOLOWAIVED. Next is a 10 percent supplement on select 2026 and 2027 Europe sailings with the code SOLO10, again excluding suites. The third is a 25 percent supplement in entry-level categories, Category E and D in Europe and Category C on the Mekong aboard [AmaDara](https://crusiefrog.com/ships/amadara).\n\nIn practice, a solo guest who is flexible on dates and willing to take a lower-deck fixed-window room can usually sail for close to the per-person fare. Someone who wants a twin-balcony stateroom on a specific summer week should expect to pay 10 to 25 percent more than a couple would each pay, which is still a long way from the doubling some lines charge.\n\n## How the line looks after you\n\nThe solo perks are modest but useful. AmaWaterways offers solo guests a guided tour of the ship at the start of the cruise, which is really a way to meet the other people traveling alone on day one. It extends select invitations to cocktail gatherings or the Captain's Table. And it sets some dining tables for five, an odd number chosen so that a single guest can join two couples without anyone feeling like a spare.\n\nBeyond that, the rhythm of the ship does the work. The daily cocktail hour in the lounge before dinner is where the whole ship gathers. Excursions run in small groups at gentle, regular and active paces, and the active ones, with guided bike rides along the Danube or hikes above the Douro, draw a sociable crowd. Wine and beer flow with lunch and dinner, which helps.\n\n## Which itineraries suit solos\n\nThe Danube between Budapest and Passau and the Rhine between Amsterdam and Basel are the easiest first solo river cruises. They are the busiest routes, with the most departures and the most solo offers, and the towns are safe and walkable if you want to skip the group tour. The Douro in Portugal on [AmaDouro](https://crusiefrog.com/ships/amadouro) or [AmaSintra](https://crusiefrog.com/ships/amasintra) is smaller, slower and very social, with only about 100 guests on board. Christmas market cruises draw a lot of solo travelers and are a good pick if you would rather not spend the holidays at home.\n\n## Who it suits\n\nAmaWaterways suits solo travelers who want a cultured, port-heavy week with good food and no logistics to manage. It is strong for older solo guests and for active ones who want to cycle or hike. It is not the place for nightlife, a casino or a busy singles scene, and if you need a single cabin on a specific newer ship, you will not find one. Book early, watch the solo offers page, and be flexible on category. The river does the rest.\n\nSources: AmaWaterways, \"Solo Travelers\" offers page (<https://www.amawaterways.com/offers/solo-travelers>); AmaWaterways ship pages for AmaCello, AmaDante, AmaDolce, AmaLyra and AmaMagna.","textStyle":"body","layout":"text"}]}
