AmaWaterways is giving Colombia river-cruise guests a way to continue their trip into Peru, with a five-night land extension centered on Machu Picchu. The program is planned for select departures beginning in April 2027.

The line listed the announcement in its Oct. 13 newsroom. Details reported by Cruise Industry News and Travel Market Report describe a six-day itinerary after the Magic of Colombia cruise.

How the extension connects

Guests disembark in Cartagena and fly to Lima, with the flight between those destinations included in the land package. The trip continues through Cusco and the Sacred Valley, with a guided Machu Picchu visit.

Reported highlights include Lima's Miraflores and Barranco neighborhoods, Ollantaytambo, the Maras salt pans, and Moray. The journey to Machu Picchu uses either the Hiram Bingham train or first-class Inca Rail.

The program offers Boutique and Iconic hotel options. Reports describe Luxury Collection properties in the Boutique version and Belmond hotels in the Iconic version.

From 2028, the extension is planned for all eligible post-cruise Magic of Colombia departures. Travelers should confirm availability for the precise sailing, especially during the initial 2027 season.

Think of it as a second stage of the vacation

This is a land journey attached to a river cruise, so the experience changes after disembarkation. Hotels, flights, road travel, and rail travel become part of the daily plan.

Review the sequence of days and decide whether you want that additional pace after the cruise. The attraction is being able to combine two distinct destinations within a coordinated trip.

Ask which transfers are included and where the package ends. Those answers matter when choosing the flight home and deciding whether to add another hotel night.

If your group has different priorities, discuss them before booking. A traveler eager for several active sightseeing days may view the extension differently from someone seeking a quiet finish to the vacation.

Compare the two accommodation options

The hotel tier should be assessed using the actual properties, room categories, transport, and train arrangements in the quote. A package name alone does not show the complete difference.

Ask whether the sightseeing program changes between versions or whether the main distinction is the hotel and rail experience. Confirm any free time and optional activities as well.

Keep the cruise and land components visible in the budget. The included Cartagena–Lima flight does not establish that every international flight or additional night is covered.

Review the payment and cancellation terms for the combined booking. If plans change, it is useful to know how the cruise and extension are treated together.

Confirm the itinerary before arranging flights

Start with Cruise Frog's AmaWaterways page, then obtain the current extension itinerary directly from the line or booking advisor. Ask for the final departure city and date before purchasing onward travel.

The Peru program could suit travelers who want a coordinated journey beyond the Magdalena River. The strongest reason to choose it is the complete experience, including the hotels, guided visits, and travel between them. Compare those details with arranging a separate Peru trip before deciding which approach best fits your time and preferences.
