Two ships out by March 2028
Carnival Cruise Line will cut its Australian fleet from four ships to two. Carnival Luminosa and Carnival Adventure will both leave the market in March 2028, according to Travel Weekly Australia and Seatrade Cruise News, which reported the decision on October 15, 2026.
The dates are:
- Carnival Luminosa: final voyage from Sydney on March 15, 2028. The ship has sailed seasonally from Brisbane since cruising restarted in 2022.
- Carnival Adventure: leaves Sydney on March 20, 2028, and will not return to Australia as first planned.
Two ships stay. Carnival Splendor will keep sailing year-round from Sydney. Carnival Encounter will keep sailing year-round from Brisbane.
A bigger step than February's plan
This goes further than Carnival's last change. In February 2026, Carnival said Carnival Adventure would spend the northern summer in North America from April 2028, while still sailing seasonally in Australia. At that time, both Luminosa and Adventure were set to split their time between the two markets, TravelPulse reported. That plan is now replaced by a full exit for both ships.
Why Carnival says it is leaving
Carnival pointed to how far ahead ships are deployed. It said it weighs long-term certainty and operating conditions that compete with other markets around the world. Carnival's country manager, Peter Little, said the federal government recently extended the cruise industry's ability to sail between Australian ports until the end of 2028. He called that "a welcome but interim step" while a long-term framework is developed, Seatrade reported.
Little said Carnival, as the only cruise line with ships based in Australia all year, has "greater exposure to changes in local market and operating conditions." He said Carnival will "work constructively with the federal government" on future arrangements, according to Travel Weekly Australia.
The industry group CLIA Australasia told Seatrade that regulatory uncertainty and rising costs have hurt Australia's ability to attract cruise ships. It said the move will take hundreds of millions of dollars out of the visitor economy.
What it means if you are booked
Neither report says what happens to guests already booked on the two ships for dates after they leave. The departure dates fall in March 2028, so sailings before then should not be affected by this decision. If you hold a booking on Luminosa or Adventure after March 20, 2028, contact Carnival or your travel agent and ask what options apply. Get the answer in writing.
Carnival is still selling cruises in the meantime. Little encouraged guests to book over the next 18 months. Carnival said it will offer value-focused sailings over the next two summers. It also said it will release its 2028/29 program for Splendor and Encounter in the coming weeks.
Fewer choices from Australian ports
With two ships instead of four, Carnival will have fewer ships to spread across Australian departures. Splendor will sail from Sydney and Encounter from Brisbane. The full picture of dates and itineraries will only be clear once the 2028/29 schedule is out.
The reports do not say where Luminosa and Adventure will sail after they leave. Carnival Adventure was already headed for North America under the February plan. Watch for deployment news from Carnival before assuming either ship's next home.
My take
If you love cruising on Luminosa or Adventure from Australia, plan those trips before March 2028. If you are flexible, wait for the 2028/29 program for Splendor and Encounter before booking that season. A smaller fleet can mean fewer dates, so do not leave peak school holidays to the last minute.
