Royal Caribbean moves Hero of the Seas' debut up to August 1, 2027 and adds two sailings

The fourth Icon-class ship gets a 7-night cruise on August 1 and a 3-night getaway on August 8, 2027, ten days before its original first sailing. Bookings opened October 7.

Royal Caribbean will put Hero of the Seas into service earlier than planned. The fourth Icon-class ship was set to carry its first guests on August 11, 2027. Now a 7-night cruise on August 1, 2027 will come first, followed by a 3-night getaway on August 8. Bookings for the two added sailings opened on October 7, 2026. The news came in a notice sent to guests already booked on the original inaugural sailing. Cruise Hive first reported it on October 5.

What was added

The first new sailing is a 7-night Perfect Day CocoCay and Western Caribbean cruise departing August 1, 2027. The second is a 3-night Perfect Day CocoCay getaway departing August 8, 2027. Together they move the ship's passenger debut forward by ten days. The original 3-night sailing on August 11 stays on the schedule, so guests who are booked on it do not need to do anything to keep their reservation.

"To celebrate this milestone, we're excited to share that not only one, but two additional sailings have been added," the guest notice said, according to Cruise Hive. Guests on the August 11 cruise were told first and given the option to move to one of the earlier dates. Change fees are waived through October 14, 2026, and suites were held until that date before being released for general sale, the outlet reported.

Cruise Industry News reported that stateroom bookings opened on October 7, 2026 at 8:00 AM ET, while Cruise Hive said the afternoon of that day. Royal Caribbean said construction is "progressing ahead of schedule," which is what made the extra sailings possible, according to Cruise Industry News.

Which port the ship will leave from

The two reports do not agree on the departure port for the added cruises. Cruise Industry News says the added sailings leave from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. Cruise Hive says the original August 11 sailing departs PortMiami, which is the ship's announced year-round homeport. Royal Caribbean's own website lists Hero of the Seas' 7-night Perfect Day CocoCay and Western Caribbean itineraries as departing from Miami, Florida. The guest email quoted by Royal Caribbean Blog also said the line "simply can't wait to welcome guests onboard in Miami." That points to PortMiami. Still, we could not find the August 1 and August 8 departures listed on royalcaribbean.com to settle the question. Anyone booking should confirm the embarkation port with the line.

The ship

Hero of the Seas is under construction at Meyer Turku in Finland. Its keel was laid in September 2025, and the ship floated out on September 4, 2026, roughly 12 months later, per Cruise Hive. It is now in outfitting at the yard, with sea trials and delivery still to come. Cruise Hive lists the ship at 248,663 gross tons with 5,654 guests at double occupancy. Cruise Industry News gives a slightly lower figure of 5,610 passengers.

Once in service, Hero will sail year-round 7-night Caribbean cruises from South Florida. Royal Caribbean's itinerary pages show Western Caribbean routes that call at Roatan, Honduras and Cozumel, Mexico, with a day at the line's private destination, Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas. Eastern Caribbean sailings visit St. Maarten and St. Thomas. Cruise Industry News reports that Hero will replace Icon of the Seas as the Icon-class ship based in South Florida. Onboard, the Royal Theater will stage "The SpongeBob Musical," which the line announced earlier.

A pattern for Icon-class debuts

Starting early has become something of a habit for this class. Cruise Hive notes that Star of the Seas ran a 4-night showcase cruise from Port Canaveral on August 16, 2025, ahead of its August 31 maiden voyage. Legend of the Seas then sailed its first cruise on July 4, 2026, a week before its planned July 11 debut, with a 7-night Western Mediterranean itinerary. Hero of the Seas now follows the same path with a ten-day head start.

Royal Caribbean has not published a formal press release about the schedule change on its press center, and the line did not say in the guest notice what allowed the earlier dates. As of this writing, the company's press page for the ship carries only the official rendering shown above.
