5 things Holland America Line does well—and 1 it doesn’t

Five strengths of Holland America Line, one clear drawback, and the travelers most likely to enjoy its cruise style.

Cruise linesBy Cruise Frog

Holland America suits couples and travelers who want a calmer, more traditional cruise on a mid-sized ship, with good dining and itineraries that spend real time in port. It is a strong choice for Alaska, especially for cruisetours that add Denali and the Yukon, and for longer trips: Grand Voyages, a world cruise and transatlantic crossings. Solo travelers will find single staterooms on the Pinnacle-class ships, and Oosterdam is adding Solo Verandah cabins. Families with young children, or groups looking for nightlife, water parks and short getaways, are usually better served by a mainstream line, and travelers who want most extras included in the fare should look at luxury lines.

This assessment looks at the product and its fit for different travelers. The strengths are reasons to consider the line, rather than a promise that every guest will value them equally. Ship details and fare terms still matter.

1. A strong Alaska offering

Alaska is central to Holland America's program, with cruises and land combinations giving guests several ways to explore. That breadth is useful for travelers who want more than a coastal sailing. Compare the actual glacier visits and inland nights rather than relying on the Alaska label.

2. An adult-oriented pace

The line offers a calmer large-ship holiday centered on ports, dining and evening entertainment. That balance suits couples and travelers who do not need thrill attractions. Families can sail, but the overall rhythm is different from a ship built primarily around children's activities.

3. Music as an evening draw

Live-music venues give guests an alternative to making every evening about a large theater production. The particular program varies by ship. Music-minded travelers should check the vessel's current lineup, since a favorite venue name is not a fleetwide guarantee.

4. Longer itineraries with substance

Panama Canal transits, extended voyages and world cruises give guests time to settle into the ship. A comfortable routine matters on those trips. The range makes Holland America relevant for travelers who want to keep cruising beyond the standard week in the Caribbean.

5. Ships below the largest resort scale

The fleet offers a substantial range of facilities without the scale of the biggest megaships. That can make the ship easier to navigate while preserving restaurant and entertainment choices. Compare the exact vessel, since older ships and Pinnacle-class ships provide different onboard experiences.

The drawback: It does not specialize in thrill attractions

Travelers who want extensive waterslides, rides and a high-energy family resort will generally find a stronger match elsewhere. Holland America's appeal lies in another set of priorities. Do not choose it mainly for activities that are absent, then expect the itinerary to compensate for the mismatch.

Before you book

Choose the itinerary and the ship together. Cabin dimensions, dining access and time in port can matter more than a broad premium label. Compare the booked fare with the drinks, internet and outings you would actually buy. A comfortable routine is valuable only when it suits how you want to travel.
