Antarctica is not one interchangeable cruise itinerary. Ponant's new 2028–29 program makes that clear: a ten-night peninsula trip, a Weddell Sea voyage and a longer Ross Sea expedition ask different things of your time and travel budget.
Cruise Industry News reports twelve routes across nearly thirty departures. Our season overview lists the announced choices. I would narrow the geography first, then compare dates, cabins and fare inclusions.
The shorter trip still needs a whole travel plan
The program includes ten-night Emblematic Antarctica departures on Le Boréal and Le Lyrial. For many travelers, that is a more manageable starting point than a multiweek expedition. It still needs flights, transfer planning and time around embarkation.
I would count days away from home rather than just nights aboard. An attractive fare can become a difficult holiday if the international flights leave no room for a delay. Check exactly which flights and hotel nights the chosen fare includes.
Weddell Sea itineraries involve a different ship
Le Commandant Charcot is the ship assigned to the announced Weddell Sea and other specialized ice routes. Compare the actual itinerary and expedition plan rather than treating the ship as a more expensive version of a standard cruise.
Ask what activities are planned, which depend on conditions and what equipment is supplied. Do not turn an itinerary map into a guarantee of a landing or wildlife encounter. The value of an expedition includes how it adapts when weather and ice change the day.
The Ross Sea needs a larger time commitment
The announced Ross Sea trips on Le Soléal run twenty-one nights. That is a very different commitment from ten nights on the peninsula side. The flight routing and the total time away may be just as important as the cabin price.
I would compare the route with what you most want to learn or see. A longer trip is not automatically better for a first visit. It can be a strong choice for someone with a specific interest and enough flexibility to enjoy the full journey.
Compare the complete quotation
Ask for an itemized quote covering the cabin, any solo supplement, required flights, transfers, equipment and optional activities. Confirm the deposit, final-payment date and cancellation schedule. A low starting fare may describe a cabin or departure that does not match your plans.
Our Ponant line guide gives context on the operator. Use it alongside the exact voyage documents, not instead of them. The cruise ship directory can help distinguish the vessels when two itineraries appear similar at first glance.
My choice would begin with the route I most want to experience and the total time I can comfortably give it. Only then would I decide whether a larger cabin is worth the premium. In Antarctica, choosing the right journey is likely to matter more than moving one cabin category higher.
Keep planning
