A small ship and a large resort-style ship can sell the same region while offering very different holidays. I would compare the port days and onboard routine before deciding whether Windstar's higher fare is worth paying.
Windstar's leaders recently said the line was not seeing the same Caribbean pricing pressure as some competitors, according to Cruise Industry News. They pointed to small-ship access and distinctive harbors. Our pricing report covers the remarks. They are the company's view, not a guarantee that every sailing is good value.
Compare the itinerary line by line
Two seven-night Caribbean cruises may have different port hours, sea days and tender arrangements. Write down the time actually available in each destination. A place you are excited to explore can justify a premium more convincingly than a vague promise of exclusivity.
I would also check whether the small ship docks or uses tenders at the stops that matter most. Small does not mean every port is a walk straight from the gangway. Our tender-port planning guide explains why the transfer belongs in the day's schedule.
Picture an ordinary afternoon onboard
Use the Windstar line guide and the exact ship profile to judge the atmosphere. A traveler who wants a quieter pace may value a smaller vessel. Someone who wants a broad choice of family attractions and large evening productions may prefer a different kind of ship.
That is a fit question, not a verdict that one style is more sophisticated. I would rather book the product the whole party will enjoy than pay a premium for an experience that suits only one person's idea of a holiday.
Build a comparable total
Put the cabin, drinks, internet, gratuities, excursions and transport into the same comparison. Check the inclusions of the actual fare. Do not assume every small-ship quote is all-inclusive or that every large-ship quote excludes the same items.
For a hypothetical $1,400 difference between two cruises for the party, ask what you receive for that amount. If it buys ports and a pace you strongly prefer, it may be worthwhile. If the main difference is a label, I would keep looking. Compare cancellation terms as well as the total.
Check which Windstar ship you mean
The fleet includes different vessel styles. Our Star Explorer profile is a starting point for that ship, while the ship directory lets you compare other choices. Photos of a sailing yacht should not set expectations for a motor yacht, or vice versa.
My take is that small-ship value is easiest to see in the daily experience: how you spend the morning, where you go ashore and what you want from the evening. If those details match your preferences, a higher fare can make sense. If they do not, a cheaper large ship may be the better holiday rather than a compromise.
