We aged every ship at 10 big cruise lines. Holland America and Carnival have the oldest fleets

Cruise Frog's ship data shows how old each big line's fleet really is. Virgin's ships average about three years. Holland America's average 18.

Why ship age matters

A cruise line's ads show its newest ship. But most of its sailings run on older ones. An older ship is not always worse. Many get big refits. Still, age tells you a lot about cabin size, deck layout and how many newer features you will find.

So we used Cruise Frog's own ship data to age every ship now sailing at 10 big lines. We counted only ships in service today, not ones on order or retired. Age is 2026 minus the year each ship first entered service.

Carnival: more than half the fleet is 21 or older

Carnival's average is just behind Holland America's. But its middle ship is older. Its median ship is 21 years old, the highest of the 10 lines. Of its 29 ships, 15 entered service in 2005 or earlier. The newest is Carnival Jubilee, from 2023.

That makes sense for a line that grew fast in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Carnival also refits older ships. Carnival Freedom just came back from a dry dock with a new funnel, for example.

Royal Caribbean: both extremes

Royal Caribbean has the widest range. Its oldest ship, Grandeur of the Seas, dates from 1996. Its newest, Legend of the Seas, entered service in 2026. That is a 30-year gap inside one brand. Thirteen of its 30 ships are from 2004 or earlier.

If you book Royal Caribbean for the big new features, check which ship you are on. The experience on a 1990s ship is very different from an Icon Class ship.

Disney looks old on paper, but isn't

Disney's oldest ship, Disney Magic, is from 1998. Yet its median ship is only 9 years old, the lowest after Virgin. Four of Disney's eight ships entered service from 2022 on, which pulls the middle down.

Disney also has the most room per guest by our numbers. Its ships average a space ratio of 50.5 gross tons per guest. That is far above the others in this group.

Virgin is the baby

Virgin Voyages has only four ships. The oldest, Scarlet Lady, entered service in 2021. The newest, Brilliant Lady, came in 2025. Its fleet averages about three years old.

How to use this

Age is one clue, not the whole story. A well-kept ship with a recent refit can beat a newer one on service. But if you want the newest cabins and venues, the line's average age tells you how likely you are to get them.

Before you book, look up your exact ship on Cruise Frog. Each ship page shows its year, size and space per guest.

How we did it

We pulled every in-service ship for each line from Cruise Frog's ship directory on Oct. 21, 2026. We used each ship's first year in service. Average and median ages, and the space ratio averages, were computed by script from that data.
